About

Dr. Tyler Ronald Bonnell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Psychology (Adjunct) at the University of Calgary, where he also serves as the Co-Director of the Data Science and Analytics program. He leads the Behavioural Ecology and Data Science Lab, an interdisciplinary research group that sits at the intersection of GIScience, Ecology, and Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Bonnell is a pioneer in using Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) and Reinforcement Learning to decode the complex adaptive systems of social animals. His research focuses on how wildlife populations—ranging from St. Lawrence Estuary beluga whales to African primates—interact with their changing environments, particularly in response to human-induced climate change and the propagation of infectious diseases. By developing sophisticated geospatial and statistical tools, he aims to provide actionable insights for conservation management and a deeper understanding of the evolution of collective behavior.
