Sarah M. Brown is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Statistics at the University of Rhode Island, where she leads the ML4Good Lab. Her research is focused on the socio-technical implications of artificial intelligence, specifically in algorithmic fairness, explainable machine learning, and socially responsible AI. She develops computational frameworks to audit and mitigate bias in automated decision-making systems, ensuring that machine learning models are not only accurate but also equitable and transparent. Her work often intersects with public policy and ethics, aiming to provide "practitioner-centric" tools that allow data scientists to understand the disparate impacts of their models. Before joining URI, she was a postdoctoral research associate at Brown University and earned her Ph.D. from Northeastern University.
