About
Qi Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department and the Data Science & Artificial Intelligence program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He joined WPI in July 2025, having previously served as an Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina (2020–2025). Dr. Zhang’s research focuses on the theory and application of cooperative artificial intelligence, with a specific emphasis on reinforcement learning (RL), multi-agent systems, and single-agent planning. His work aims to build collaborative AI agents capable of efficient decision-making in uncertain and dynamic environments. A recipient of the NSF CAREER Award and the David J. Kuck Dissertation Prize, his recent projects explore "structuring cooperative teams" to optimize communication and computation in decentralized multi-agent settings, including the development of world models for decentralized training.
