About

Hanqi Zhuang earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Florida Atlantic University in 1989, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Florida Atlantic University in 1986, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Shanghai University in 1982. His research interests include Signal Processing, Machine Learning and Large Language Models, Topic Modeling and Sentiment Analysis, Marine Animal Sound Detection and Classification, and Biomedical Applications such as Cancer Diagnosis, Seizure Detection, Emotion Detection, and Classification. He has been involved in extensive sponsored research, including projects on expanding sustainable computer science pathways for students funded by NEU/Gates Foundation; CyberCorps Scholarship for Service supported by the NSF; data-driven approaches to integrating AI in K–12 education through NSF RAPID funding; studies on dolphin behavioral responses and the distribution, health, and behavioral ecology of Florida whales supported by HBOI Foundations; initiatives to make master’s degrees in Artificial Intelligence accessible through NSF S-STEM funding; research on personal cloud infrastructure supported by the U.S. Army Research Office; DARPA-funded work on integrated acoustic smart-sensing for coastal defense; Department of Education–funded programs to increase graduation rates of Hispanic and low-income students in computer science; and research on ocean current prediction using transfer learning supported by the Gulf Research Programs of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.
