Daniel Lai is an Electonics and Computer Systems Engineer (BEng Monash) with a PhD in machine learning (Monash, 2006). He is currently Course Director of Software Engineering, having recently joined Deakin (2024). He has over 16 years of research-industry collaborations for electronics and software based projects, specialising in minimum viable products and in-field product testing in areas such as health, sports, manufacturing, supply chain and energy industries. He has over 150 peer reviewed articles, including 3 books in the areas of wireless sensor networks. His current research interests include artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, quantum security and robotics. Daniel has previously held administrative roles, including head of electrical and electronics engineering (VU), Tech Ambassador to the Australian Nanofabrication Facility (ANFF), and Defence Liasion Manager to the Defence Science Institute (DSI). He is a member of Engineers Australia, IEEE, and ACS, and active reviewer of high impact journals such as IEEE Transactions, Applied Materials, and Nature Communications.
