About

Dr. Ceren Budak is an Associate Professor of Information in the School of Information at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and also serves as a Faculty Associate at the Center for Political Studies, Institute for Social Research. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and completed a postdoctoral position at Microsoft Research in New York before joining the University of Michigan faculty in 2015. Her research lies in the field of computational social science, where she applies large-scale data analysis, network science, machine learning, and computational methods to study social, political, and policy-relevant phenomena. Budak’s work focuses on how information spreads and is regulated in digital environments, including the dynamics of misinformation and cross-partisan animosity, and how norms, platform architecture, and markets shape online behaviors. She has been recognized with prestigious honors such as a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award and a fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. Budak’s scholarship spans interdisciplinary collaborations across communication, political science, information science, and computational disciplines, and she has published extensively on topics including news media production and consumption, online social movements, and the regulation of problematic online behaviors. Her work combines computational rigor with attention to real-world social impacts and policy implications.
